![]() ![]() Like a charismatic preacher, Greer ministers to her charges as if she were on a vast maternal crusade, affectionately referring to all her students – regardless of age – as “my babies.” No small part of what makes 32nd Street/ USC/MaST extraordinary is principal Gail Greer. Most are bussed to the Jefferson Boulevard campus from across the city to take advantage of these exceptional magnet schools in the L.A. USC’s immediate neighbor to the north is educational home to some 1,000 young people, ranging from rambunctious kindergartners to too-cool high school seniors. All are students at the 32nd Street/USC and MaST (Math, Science and Tech-nology) High School – a member of the USC-sponsored Family of Five Schools partnership. Though no blood ties bind these brothers and sisters, they belong to a larger brood that’s no less a family. The very vulnerability of the 5- to 7-year-olds forces the teens to be responsible role models, to carry themselves as budding adults. The smaller children are grateful, if a tad embarrassed, to be on the receiving end of this “grown-up” attention.Īs for the adolescents, they know full well that they’re closely observed and admired. It's a big challenge but if the children all work together and each one does their share, they will be able to do it.The teenagers look after the little ones with mock-grudging concern, picking them up and dusting them off after they’ve taken a tumble, bending down to dry their tears in the face of life’s vicissitudes. I have challenged the children to read 1000 times before the end of the year. When we learnt that the Parish Council was planning to improve Elmhurst Park (the play park just across the road from school) we decided to raise money to help to make the park more inclusive. Year 1 pupils at Hutton CE Primary School have been taking part in the Archbishop of York 'Young Leaders Award' and have been learning all about what makes a good leader. As part of the programme, they have to help their local community either through action (such as litter picking) or through fund raising. This is a highly advantageous position for a school to be in during the current financial climate. The Foundation have generously funded all of these elements, as well as a team of mentors to support the school in achieving its aims. Part of the funding will be used to build a bespoke Literacy Hub, where the children will be encouraged to read and take part in interventions in an attractive and well-resourced environment. Alex has helped design our literacy programme, structured staff training and guided us on high quality resource provision across the last two years. ![]() The Foundation has funded the school to work with author and leading national figure in literacy, Alex Quigley (author of ‘Closing the Reading Gap’). ![]() We’ve named the programme The Educate, Inspire, Support (E.I.S. The Foundation want to create a set of approaches that can be mirrored out to other schools in the future and have chosen Ashcombe as their developmental centre. This is because we know that children who achieve well by the end of primary school are statistically far more likely to go on to have more successful outcomes in later life- educationally, professionally and in terms of their overall health and wellbeing. The Foundation and Ashcombe Primary School are working together to create a unique programme aimed at supporting our most disadvantaged children to achieve as highly as possible by the end of Year 6. The Foundation is the charitable wing of the well-known Hargreaves Lansdown pensions company. Following involvement with the Hargreaves Foundation’s Educate, Inspire & Support Programme, Ashcombe have been fortunate to have been supported with three quarters of a million pounds of additional funding ( ). ![]()
